Wedge Golf Club

I was thinking of getting a new golf club ?

i have 3 wedges 4-pw irons 3 wood driver hybrid putter so im maxed out at 14 but im thinking of replacing any ideas?

I disagree with the earlier statement that the driver is a wasted club unless you shoot under 80 on a regular basis. I shoot in the 80's and I can tell you that my scores would be considerably higher without my driver.

Excluding the par 3's and the occasional short par 4, it's the driver that puts me in position to hit the green with relative ease and it's on the holes where I hit a good drive that I'm most often in position to par or even birdie. I also wouldn't expect to be in position to hit many of teh short par 5's in 2 without a driver in my bag.

If I were to leave my driver home and use my 3-wood or a hybrid off the tee, as has been suggested above, I'm at least 20 to 40 yards shorter of the tee, almost certainly more when I really hit a good shot with my driver....that's 2 to 4 club lengths difference (or more!!) on the 2nd shot.

I can tell you that I'd much rather be hitting my 7-iron into the green than my 3-iron. I'm guessing most folks feel the same way.

The only way I'd say the driver is a wasted club is if you really struggle to hit it effectively. But if that's the case, go see a teaching pro and work through your problems. If you hit the driver well, it puts you in much better position for your subsequent shots. And in the end, that's how you get low scores....put yourself in positin to hit a short iron and then knock that short iron stiff.

I'm still working on knocking my short irons stiff, but I can tell you that I hit far more greens with them than I do with my long irons. So unless I'm willing to conceed that almost every par 4 is really a par 5 for me before I even hit the first shot, which I'm not willing to do, I'm keeping my driver in the bag.

In terms of replacing clubs, as was your question, I agree that your 4-iron is potentially expendable...but that depends on how far you hit your hybrid. Does it effectively replace your 4-iron?

As for alternatives to the 4 iron, you might want another hybrid to close the gap between your current hybrid and your 3-wood, or if there's a gap between your 5-iron and current hybrid. But not knowing what hybrid you have, it's difficult to say what gaps you likely have.

Depending on your short game and how comfortable you are there, you might want to add a wedge to fill whatever gap you have at the short end. But again, without more detail as to what you're carrying today, it's difficult to advise.

In the end, if you're playing your current clubs well and you don't feel like you have any gaps that need to be filled, I'd leave things the way they are. Why mess with something that works? On the other hand, if you have a gap that you feel your current set doesn't fill, identify the club needed to fill that gap, then figure out what you can most do without.
