Game improvement or forged irons?

I am a freshman in high school and i am on the golf team at my school. When talking to my coach about what kind of clubs i should get he said that anyone who makes the team is good enough not to be using cavity back irons or game imrpovement irons. SO which kind of forged irons would be best for me. I would consider myself a good iron player, it is definently the stongest part of my game. I am 5'11 and my swing spped with a driver is the the upper 90s. Which irons would be good and with what shaft?
i'm not sure what the coach really meant by this, but the question is will i be ready for forged irons and which are the most forgiving. I shoot in the mid 80s currently, goal is high 70s low 80s for next year.

Wow, what an idiotic statement your coach has made. There are many players on the PGA and Nationwide tour who do not play forged irons. The iron you play is truly your preference. You need to play what looks good and feels good to you. A better player may get some added consistency with a forged iron, but he may also be giving up valuable distance. My advice to you is to go to a demo day, and try out several different irons. If you are in high school, you are probably not finished growing. What you play right now, may be obsolete in a years time.

Do not think that you must play forged blade irons, just because some tour players play them, or for what your coach says. You need to play what you liek the best.

add: Depending on your price range, you have several options. Taylor Made and Titleist both make a forged cavity back that is very good. They will be a little more forgiving that the typical blade, but still give you the consistency you want. As for the shaft, you need to stick with the standard stiff steel shaft that comes with teh iron. If you are swinging around 90mph as a freshman, you will increase as you get stringer. The stiff shaft will allow you to utilize that swing speed. My advice is still to go and try out as many different irons as possible. NEVER play a club because someone else plays it. Play what works best for you.
