Sand Lob Wedge
What degree wedge would u recommend for lob/sand shots?
I am somewhat of a beginner in golf and I just bought a set of clubs, the only club i've yet to buy is a wedge. I have a pitching wedge but I need a wedge for sand traps/ lob shots. What degree wedge is best for this? I'm 20 years old and I can drive the ball about 250+ if that helps at all.
I suggest any sand wedge. 52-56 degrees. Lob wedges seem sreat to flop a shot straight up and down, but if you read any golf articles, or talk to any golf pros or instructors, they will almost all tell you that amateurs (especially beginners) should stay away from using this club. It is seemingly very good and could help in tough situations, but the swing to pull off a lob wedge shot correctly isn't like the normal golf swing. Tiger and Phil make it seem effortless, but listen to the anouncers when they hit this shot. They are almost laughing, saying how tough a shot it really is. They may seem like the greatest thing when you actually pull the shot off, but I'm willing to bet that more times than not you pop the ball up too quickly and leave a ton of green, or skull it across the green. I actually have a 64 degree flop wedge, but I use it vey infrequently, because I decided to learn how to hit my sand wedge with the same effect instead. (and I have a lot better control this way) Sand wedge also gives you more versatility rather than going from the extremes of a PW to a LW which can only be used right around the greens.
Again, I know some of these people will say they love the 60 degree club, but do a little research like I said, and you will see that you will get almost no professional opinions saying to go with a lob over a sand.
