What physical properties does sand add to soil?
When growing plants, what are the pluses and negatives of sand in your plant soil?

I was testing plants with different amounts of sand in the soils for a science project, so what would be the physical properties of sand?
Makes it lighter and airier. Usually also makes more alkaline.
Best benefit is good drainage, biggest minus - well, good drainage 
- you have to water more often. You also have to fertilize more otfen because: 1) water that drains away also washes away the nutrients; 2) there are less nutrients to begin with since sand is a pure inorganic matter (silica).
