Shaft flex...is XStiff too stiff?
I'm looking into getting a new driver, and am not sure if I want to go with XStiff or just stiff.
I'm a 10 handicap, and have a fairly fast fluid swing. My current driver is the original Cleveland Hibore, 8.5, with a 46" Gafalloy Prolaunch Blue.
I find that I am not very consistent off the tee, and tend to fade the ball more than I would like. I can hit a draw...it just isn't very easy with this club. I’ve hit some other drivers a lot better than this one.

If you're already fading the ball with inconsistent results off the tee you should stay away from the Xstiff shaft. Here's the reason: The reason you fade the ball more (most likely) off the tee is lack of "lag" (club head lagging behind the hands slightly) at the bottom of your swing. This is why shaft flex is important: It helps create the slight lag you need to hit the ball solidly off the tee with more control.
Faster swings must use a stiffer flex because regular flex or less with a fast swing creates too much lag which will cause duck hooks. Not enough flex with a slower swing eliminates club head "lag" and produces a block at the bottom of the swing which will cause the ball flight to "push" away from the player and even a banana slice.
So to sum it all up: Faster swing you need LESS flex for proper club head lag at the bottom of your swing. Slower swing speeds need MORE flex to create the proper lag at the bottom.
Go get your swing analyzed in order to properly determine which shaft flex is right for you. There is no other way to determine exactly what flex you need. Otherwise you can take a guess i.e. "I've got a pretty fast swing so I think I need a stiff flex".
