Copper Sand
How can you seperate a mixture of sodium chloride, sand, iron filings, and copper shot and......?
AND..recover all 4 components in their dry, solid state?
What materials would you use? ( they have to be materials you can get in any normal chemistry class. like beaker.. strainer.. bunsen burner..) -- Explain what the terms soluble and insoluble mean. 10 points best answer , please help!!! this is harddd
1...Use a strong magnet to remove the Iron filings from the mixture.
2...Use a sieve with a mesh size that will separate the Copper shot only.
3... Place the remaining salt and sand mixture into a container of warm water and stir thoroughly to dissolve the salt.
4...Pour the sand and salt solution mixture through a fine filter to separate the sand from the solution
5..Run some warm water through the sand in the filter to ensure all salt is washed through.
6...Allow the sand to dry or warm lightly in an oven to evapoate the water more quickly.
7...Allow the remaining salt solution to evaporate to dryness, heat lightly for quicker evaporation.
Voila !...Dry sand, dry salt crystals, Iron filings and copper shot in four separate heaps.
A)..In this case, Soluble means that the salt can be dissolved in water to form an aqueous solution.
B)..The Iron filings, sand and copper shot are Insoluble in the water. (Will not form a solution).
