if i paint over an iron crib with rustoleum paint is the crib then safe from lead paint?
i purchased an old iron crib and it painted but it's chipping away. I got rustoleum paint and am going to sand of the bad parts on the crib, does anyone know if it would then be safe for a baby. I don't know if lead paint was used originally but i wondered if anyone had done this. the crib is probably from 1880
Test it first. A better paint store will have test kits of lead-based paint, 2 tubes, does 4 tests, about $18. Or cheaper on line from the manufacturer: http://www.homaxproducts.com/products/paintaccessories/02/index.html
It is a simple and easy test. You can also use it for house paint, toys and ceramics.
A lot of paint contained lead in the 1880s, but not all did.
If it is lead-based paint (LBP) from 1880, the lead content is likely very high and you should get it striped BY SOMEONE ELSE and then repaint it. I say that because if you scrap or sand it yourself, you'll generate LBP dust onto your clothes, floor, etc. And it is the dust that is a problem for under-5s as their brains develop and especially for 1-2 year olds because they are on the floor so much.
Getting a good coat of paint over the existing paint won't do much without good surface preparation (true for all painting tasks). And getting down to bare metal will expose you and your family.
If you insist on sanding it yourself, wear a HEPA-rated breathing filter (paint stores have then) because adults can get acute lead poisoning. And stand upwind of the work and don't do it anywhere the kids will ever play because of the LBP dust that will fall to the ground. Strip your clothes off before going in your house, bag them, and launder them before re-use.
